The Liuhe Night Market , also Liouhe or Liouho Night Market (Chinese 六合 夜市Liùhé yèshì ) is a tourist attraction of the city of Kaohsiung and one of the most famous night markets in Taiwan .

Location and history

The Liuhe night market emerged from the earlier Dagangpu market and got its current name from Liuhe Street in the central district of Sinsing , along which it runs for a length of about 380 m. The market is close to Kaohsiung Central Railway Station and Formosa Boulevard subway station .

After a rapid increase in the market stalls in the 1950s, the market traders organized themselves in 1962 with official approval in the committee for the management of the Liuhe night market . Since then, a license issued by the city has been required to open a stand on the market.

With the increase in the number of stands and the flow of visitors, environmental problems soon arose due to the garbage produced. In the early 1980s, the city government launched a campaign to promote hygiene at night markets. The situation improved continuously in the period that followed, and as early as 1983 the Liuhe market was recognized as a " hygienically exemplary night market ".

The street section of the market has been a pedestrian zone between 5:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. since 1987; a measure that made a significant contribution to increasing the security and attractiveness of the market.

A wide variety of snacks, clothing, jewelry, toys, and other items are offered at Liuhe Market. In the culinary area there are z. B. fried rice, fried noodles, fried chicken, Jiaozi dumplings, all kinds of seafood , teppanyaki , smelly tofu , hot pot , zongzi (sticky rice dumplings ), tangyuan , fruit, juices, tea, papaya milk, ice cream and many others.

A special attraction for tourists is traditionally the “snake stand”, where snake meat and soup can be eaten and live snakes in cages can be admired.

The market attracts a large number of visitors from outside the city and is also Kaohsiung's night market most frequently visited by foreign tourists. Most of the foreign visitors come from the People's Republic of China . According to a newspaper report from 2011, the proportion of Chinese tourists among all visitors to Liuhe Market averages around 60% daily. Another large group are tourists from Japan . Many measures have been taken to meet the needs of visitors, including: a. by setting up public toilets. With the locals, on the other hand, the popularity of the market has decreased in recent years due to its increasing tourist orientation and the associated rise in prices.
