Liutberga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liutberga (also Liutperga, Liutpirc, Liutburc ; * before 750, † after 788), Duchess of Bavaria, was the daughter of the Longobard king Desiderius and his wife Ansa.

biography

It was probably 763 for political reasons with Tassilo III. , the Duke of Bavaria from the Agilolfinger family , married to strengthen the Bavarian-Lombard alliance. With him she had two sons, Theodo III. and Theodebert, as well as the two daughters Cotani and Rotrud.

Marriage to Duke Tassilo

Liutberga and her husband Tassilo donated a chalice in 777, which is now in Kremsmünster Abbey

Probably in 777 donated Liutperga and Tassilo the Kremsmünster called Tassilo chalice bearing the inscription: "TASSILO DVX FORTIS + LIVTPIRC VIRGA REGALIS", translated: "Tassilo, brave Herzog + Liutpirg, royal scion." Liutberga was made responsible for the downfall of her husband, as she Tassilo III. against the Franks should have incited. That is why she was described by contemporary chroniclers as an "evil, god-hated woman" . After Tassilo III. 788 had been deposed by Charlemagne , he, Liutberga and their children were exiled to various imperial monasteries. Liutberga probably died before 794, as nothing about her was mentioned at the Frankfurt Synod, before which Tassilo had to answer again.
