The Liwaa al-Umma ( Arabic لواء الامة, DMG Liwāʼ al-Umma  'Brigade der Umma ') is a partially religious paramilitary group of the Free Syrian Army in the civil war in Syria . The leader of the group is the Irish - Libyan fighter Mahdi al-Harati .

The Liwaa al-Umma appeared as an independent unit with foreign fighters from April 2012, and in September 2012 it joined the Free Syrian Army. The organization says that it has over 6,000 active members fighting against the Assad government .

In addition to Syrians, the Liwaa al-Umma also includes veterans of the Tripoli Brigade from the civil war in Libya (2011) . These were commanded by al-Harati and received training from Qatar special forces. The group avowedly enjoys the support of private foreign donors, predominantly from the Gulf States . Your speakers distance themselves from the jihad of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda . After the end of the civil war you intend to participate in a transitional government and to help shape Syrian politics with a moderate Islamic party.

At the beginning of 2014, the group left the Free Syrian Army and became part of the newly founded alliance Tahaluf al-Muhajirin wa-l-Ansar .
