The Loch Garten Osprey Center is a nature reserve near Boat of Garten in Abernethy Forest , Badenoch and Strathspey , in the Scottish Highlands . The nature reserve was first placed under protection in 1975 with an area of ​​617 hectares by the administration of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds . In 1994 the total area, including the Abernethy Forest, covered an area of ​​12,150 hectares.

The nature reserve is known for its population of ospreys . Loch Garten was one of the first places to be repopulated by ospreys in the 1950s. One of the special features of the nature reserve is also a mating ground for wood grouse . The reserve is also home to a high population of Scots pine , which was once characteristic of Scotland's forests. The breeding bird population includes crested tits and the Scottish crossbill , which has only been recognized as an independent species since 1998 and, with an estimated 300 individuals, is one of the rarest European breeding birds.
