history

The oldest parts of Lochnell House date from the 17th century and were built for Duncan Campbell, 7th of Lochnell . The name comes from the branch of the Campbell clan , which comes from the Loch Nell area , a lake not far from Oban . From this time only one commercial wing in the south-west of the property is preserved today. Duncan Campbell, 8th of Lochnell, finally added another building between 1737 and 1739. This was to the east of the original house and was not connected to it. As the architect, John Baxter may have been responsible for the planning. The result was a three-story building in the Georgian style with three window axes that ended with a hipped roof . A half-octagonal tower with a spiral staircase connected to the southwest. The new main building was directly connected to the northeast. Most of these new buildings still form the core of Lochnell House today. Between 1816 and 1820, the two-century building parts were finally connected by a wing extending at the rear. Archibald Elliot was responsible for the planning . In 1853, much of Lochnell House was destroyed by fire and it was probably vacant as a result. At the end of the 19th century, parts of the building were restored and put back into a habitable condition.

The property also includes several outbuildings, some of which are also listed, including the Lochnell Observatory 800 m to the south-west .
