Locke and the Football Boots is a book by Hasso Damm for young people . It tells the story of the sporting career of a boy who is enthusiastic about football, who has gone from being a sporty "loser" to becoming a player on the national school soccer team .

The novel is set in West Germany shortly after the Football World Cup in 1954. Wolfgang, known as Locke, is enthusiastic about football - but his fears prevent him from making it “big”. Locke receives a pair of old football boots from his aunt Cilli, which he believes have miraculous powers. From then on, his uncertainty is blown away and his football talent becomes apparent. However, in the wake of the growing popularity, envy, resentment and negative temptations also come up against him. But after Locke recognized the value of true friendship and overcame some difficulties and his mistaken belief in the "miracle shoes", that is, his latent insecurity, he finally even got into the national school team .

Emergence

Hasso Damm wrote sporadically to Locke and the football boots for several years . He used his own stories as a template, which he had devised to entertain the youth groups he supervised. Because of the popularity of his stories and to help them remember, he wrote them down from time to time. At some point, this resulted in Locke and the football boots , or meeting point: Grumpy Lion .

The first edition of Locke and the Football Boots was published in 1957 by the Neue Jugendschriften-Verlag Hannover . The illustrations are by Franz Reins . Hasso Damm received 350 D-Marks as a “fee”.

Franz Reins drew the fictional national trainer (only referred to as "national trainer" in the text without naming his name) with the distinctive facial features of Sepp Herberger .

Hasso Damm named the fictional character of Aunt Cilli after his wife.

Well-known footballers, coaches and journalists state that "Locke and football boots" had a lasting impact on them: Volker Finke read it to his football professionals at a Christmas party.

In 2014, the journalist and author Axel Hacke presented the author Hasso Damm with a personally dedicated copy of his book "Fußballgefühle", in which he created a soulful memorial to Damm and his Locke .
