Hasso Thaddäus Walter Damm (born April 23, 1928 in Munich ; † June 15, 2020 in Ober-Mörlen ) was a German author of children's and youth literature . His most famous works are Locke and the Football Boots and Meeting Place: Grumpy Lion .

Life

Damm was born in Munich in 1928 as the first child of his parents. His family originally comes from Klotzsche , Dresden . His father was studying dentistry in Munich when he was born. The family later returned to Saxony. Hasso Damm attended the Humanist State Gymnasium (formerly the Royal Saxon Gymnasium) in Dresden until he was seventeen. His favorite subjects were German, Greek and Latin. Due to the war, he received the secondary school diploma . From the beginning of 1945 Damm served in the labor service.

After the war, Damm had to put off his wish to study German at first. Because of the allocation guidelines ( Numerus clausus ) in force at the time , the rare study places were given preferentially to older combatants. Later Damm studied law and economics in Jena. Before he could finish his studies, he moved to the western zone of occupation in Hesse after a few semesters because of politically motivated reprisals by the Soviet headquarters . This was followed by two semesters of theology in Marburg and the continuation of his law studies. In addition to his studies and then full-time until his retirement, he worked in the US administration of the American zone of occupation .

Inspired by his work in the youth sector, Hasso Damm began to write down and collect the stories he thought up on campfire evenings. This resulted in some published short stories and two books for young people. Especially Locke and the football boots coined soccer players and coaches (eg. As Volker Finke ) and sports journalists like Axel Hacke , the dam for its "Locke" in his book "Football feelings" honors. Despite the success, Hasso Damm only wrote writing as a part-time job.

In terms of sport, Hasso Damm was primarily involved as a handball trainer. He died in June 2020 at the age of 92 in Ober-Mörlen, Hesse .
