The Loferer Schacht is located in the Loferer Steinberge ( Land Salzburg , Austria ) and is by far the largest cave in the Loferer Steinberge with a total depth of 806 m (+10 m, −796 m) and a total length of 10,449 m.

Two characteristics characterize the Lofer Shaft: the shaft system, which leads from the entrance (height 2200 m) almost vertically to -655 m and a large-scale horizontal system, which extends almost 1000 m from SW to NE along a fault zone and parallel to the falling layers of the Dachstein limestone extends.

The western shaft system of the Lofer shaft was discovered and measured by Polish cave explorers from Krakow in 1983 and 1984. The cave group of the German Alpine Club Frankfurt / Main undertook a new survey in 1990 and 1991 to a depth of −655 meters. During the expansion of the material in 1992, the branch into the eastern Frankfurt system was discovered at −106 m, which could be explored between 1993 and 2000 down to −707 m. In the years 2001 to 2009, starting from the horizontal system, a depth of −796 m was reached.
