Lohkva (German Lofkatten ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community Luunja ( Lunia ) in Tartu County . It has 903 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2010).

Location and history

Lohkva is located on the eastern outskirts of the second largest Estonian city of Tartu ( Dorpat ). The place was first mentioned in 1220 under the name Lovecotte in the Chronicle of Henry of Latvia .

From the cemetery Lohkvas the visitor has a beautiful view over the glacial valley of the River Emajõgi ( Embach ). In 1935, a Jewish cemetery was also established in Lohkva, which is administered by the Tartu Jewish community founded in 1918 . The historic cemetery building was destroyed by German troops in 1944.

Personalities

Lohkva is the birthplace of the Estonian composer David Otto Wirkhaus (1837–1912) and the writer Karl Eduard Sööt (1862–1950). A memorial stone on Sööt's birthplace on his parents' Mühlenhof reminds us of the popular poet today .
