Lohmann GmbH & Co. KG is a company in the field of technical adhesive products with headquarters in the Neuwied district of Feldkirchen (Neuwied) . At 29 locations and with 50 sales partners worldwide, Lohmann offers adhesive solutions for a wide variety of industries.

Technologies

In 1938 Lohmann began producing double-sided adhesive tapes. This is where the company's core business lies to this day and around 1440 patents for adhesive connections have been registered to date.

The business field now includes not only double-sided adhesive tapes: In 1951 the graphic market was opened up. With the DuploFLEX product line , there was now also adhesive tapes for the printing industry. In 2006 Lohmann-Koester developed elastic diaper ears.

After around two years of construction, the TEC Center at the main Neuwied site was inaugurated in autumn 2016. On over 1200 m² it offers space for modern laboratories, conference rooms and the so-called bonding arena , an application technology laboratory. The TEC Center is also home to a High Performance Coating Line , a modern coating system. The latest invention is "UV-LUX technology", the world's first adhesive tape solution with color change that can be activated by UV light.

history

Friedrich Julius Carl Lüscher founded a company in Frankfurt am Main in July 1851 for the import and distribution of chemicals , dyes and auxiliary materials for dye works and basic materials for pharmacies . In 1870 August Lohmann took over the management and the company. It was relocated to Bad Godesberg and the range was expanded to include bandages. This resulted in the Lüscher & Bömper cotton and bandage factory .

In 1899 the company came to Fahr am Rhein and Johannes Lohmann, a brother of the company director, entered the business. In 1929 the company was renamed Lohmann . In the 1920s and 1930s, the production began of wound dressings and plaster bandages . In 1924 the chemist Georg Teske invented the first elastic plaster bandage (Elastoplast) and in 1930 the fixed plaster bandage Cellona . From 1938 double-sided adhesive tapes were developed for the printing industry. During the Second World War , Lohmann received the patent for the first breathable plaster (Poroplast) . At times, up to 1,000 people were employed in Fahr. In March 1945 the plant was almost completely destroyed and then plundered by American occupation forces. After the takeover by the French occupation forces, the last remaining intact machines were dismantled and transported to France .

Under the direction of Gustav Adolf Barth, Johannes Lohmann's son-in-law, the plant was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1949. It resumed the production of wound and dressing materials and developed a process for consolidating non-woven textiles (nonwovens). In 1951 the 100th anniversary was celebrated. In the meantime, operations were systematically expanded to include technical adhesive tapes and nonwovens. In 1957 the bandage material Metalline , an aluminum-coated non-woven material that does not stick to the wound, was introduced to the market. In 1975 the company was renamed "Lohmann GmbH und Co. KG".

The double-sided adhesive tapes for letterpress printing have been further developed into adhesive tapes for industrial applications. The four business areas of wound care, adhesive tape systems, transdermal therapy systems and nonwovens that have emerged over the years were transferred to independent companies at the beginning of the 1990s. In 1991 koester GmbH & Co. KG is acquired, which as Lohmann koester produces closure solutions for the hygiene sector as well as pressure-sensitive adhesive products. Another company expansion took place in 1998: The Remscheider Metafol GmbH & Co. KG was acquired, creating a location with a focus on adhesive tape packaging and high-tech punching processes. Two years later, Lohmann also gained a foothold in France and acquired the Durabloc company. The last member of the board of the founding Lohmann family, Martin Barth, retired in 2003. Under the name Lohmann, The Bonding Engineers , the company is represented at 29 international locations worldwide, has sales partners in 50 countries and employs around 1,800 people.
