history

In 1862 the city council of Fulda decided to set up gas street lighting . To this end, a 'committee' was founded on December 22nd for the establishment of a gas plant. In April 1863 the city signed a contract with Emil Spreng , engineer and director of the Nuremberg gas works, for the construction of a gas works, etc. On October 18, 1863, the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig, the gasworks with a state-of-the-art retort furnace was put into operation on the site of the former Giesschen Garten. At nightfall, gas lanterns were lit for the first time in Fulda.

In 1889 a 20 km long water pipeline was built. The new Kalvarienberg elevated tank was able to supply 980 households with drinking water.

In 1875 a second retort furnace was built in which coal was converted into what is known as town gas . In 1895 a gasometer was used to store the city gas. In the following year, three gas-generating furnaces , a cleaning house , an ammonia factory and a coke breaking plant were added.

In the years 1901 to 1903 the gas works were expanded considerably. The city was divided into six lighting districts with a total of 348 lanterns. Of these, 200 were "directional lanterns" that burned from dusk to dawn, and 148 "evening lanterns" that went out at 11 p.m. A new administration building was built. In 1904, 1,164,530 cubic meters of gas were generated. 4,067,500 kilograms of coal were gasified for this and for the byproducts coke , ammonia water and tar .

In 1927 a second and third elevated water tank was built with a total of 4,700 cubic meters. After successfully drilling the groundwater to a depth of 60 m, a groundwater pumping station was built in the Fulda-Aue in 1932 .

The gas container and the town gas pipe network in the gas works were destroyed during the Second World War. After the end of the war, the reconstruction was pushed ahead. In 1954 the company completed its own medium-pressure network and built a spherical high-pressure gas container.

In the year of the 100th birthday of the company (1963), the city first purchased gas . Two years later, own generation was shut down, and Fulda was connected to the gas pipeline. The last gas lanterns were dismantled in Fulda in 1964.

In 1971 the municipal company Stadtwerke Fulda was transformed into 'Gas- und Wasserversorgung Fulda GmbH'. In 1976 the company acquired the water supply systems for the Eichenzell community , and in 1980 for the Ebersburg community . In 1990 it expanded with a conversion and extension of the depot with warehouse, parking deck and underground car park, technical administration and energy consulting improved their service. The following year the construction and commissioning of the Fulda-Niesig gas transfer station followed . In 1998, GWV founded the Bäder Betriebs GmbH. The task of this company is the management of pools - initially in Fulda.

In 2001 a natural gas filling station in Fulda was built and put into operation on the B 27 . A further expansion of the services of the service company GWV in 2003 included the cooperation with municipalities and cities in the field of 'water'. In 2004 the business field 'relaxWärme' was established. In 2006 the natural gas filling stations in Lauterbach on the B 254 and in Fulda in the Neuenberg district opened .

Following a resolution by the Fulda District Council in August 2012, GWV merged with ÜWAG to form RhönEnergie Fulda in the summer of 2013 .

Products

Gas and water supply Fulda supplies natural gas to corporate and private customers. It also operates several natural gas filling stations.

The GWV supplies almost 80,000 people in the city of Fulda and in the communities of Ebersburg and Eichenzell with drinking water. She is also responsible for the technical management of the water supply in Gersfeld and Poppenhausen . The water is pumped from wells to the central waterworks in Fulda for processing. More water from the springs in the Rhön is treated in the Götzenloch waterworks (Ebersburg).

The city region of Fulda maintains several district heating systems. The heat is generated in an environmentally friendly manner by powerful combined heat and power plants. The connected commercial and private customers receive hot water and use it for heating or domestic water heating. This means that the buildings supplied do not need their own heating system.

GWV offers corporate customers tailored contracting models for heat generation systems. The newly installed or acquired system is the property of GWV. In return, she takes care of all work. The customer pays a contracting rate plus the energy consumption. Cogeneration technology is made available to customers with high heating requirements . Offers for private customers are, for example, the combination of the solar heating system with a natural gas condensing boiler and the product relaxation heat , in which the GWV transfers the model of the leasing car to the heating. GWV is responsible for installation, repair and maintenance during the 15-year term. The customer decides on the right heating model for his consumption and pays a leasing rate as well as the usual discount on the natural gas consumption during the term.

Pool management

The subsidiary Bäder Betriebs GmbH is responsible for the public swimming pools in Fulda - Sportbad Ziehers, Freibad Rosenau, Stadtbad Esperanto - and takes care of their operation.

engagement

GWV is very committed to the region as a company that is connected to its home region. Also for the beavers who have returned to the region. The GWV has published a brochure on this. The GWV also offers teaching materials for schools on this topic and on the topic of drinking water, including a factory tour.

GWV organizes the GWV Challenge run every year. In 2011, 6,200 runners took part in the 6 km long course.

Climate protection and the environment

Sustainability and climate protection are of particular importance for GWV . The company has neutralized its carbon dioxide emissions by investing in renewable energies. In purely mathematical terms, the GWV in 2009 did not release any more carbon dioxide. According to internationally binding criteria, the GWV can call itself a climate-neutral company , certified by a seal of approval awarded by TÜV Nord .

With GWV BlueGas, the company also offers customers the opportunity to obtain their gas in a sustainable and climate-friendly manner. In addition, the issues of sustainability and energy efficiency are taken into account in the energy consultation and customers are advised of energy and water saving tips, which can also be found on the homepage.

The new project of a bio natural gas plant from GWV with exclusively biogenic residues is also a climate-friendly and sustainable project, as no renewable raw materials are used here.
