Emil Spreng was the son of Johann Nepomuk Spreng (1802–1861), director of the Karlsruhe gas factory and head of the Baden Society for Gas Preparation, and Wilhelmine geb. Bechstadt. He attended the Lyceum in Karlsruhe and later the Polytechnic there . After graduating as an engineer, Spreng went on scientific trips to Vienna and Pest (city) . He then entered the state service of the grand ducal Baden and was assigned to a section of the railway line in Offenburg . He then became an engineer at the English company Barlow & Manby , which introduced gas lighting in Karlsruhe in 1846 . Since then, Spreng has only devoted himself to the gas compartment.

Spreng became director of the gas works in Baden-Baden , and later of the gas works in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1855 he left Freiburg and joined the management of the gas works in Nuremberg . Parallel to this activity, he was independently involved in the construction of various gas stations in Bruchsal , Ansbach , Meiningen , Zweibrücken , Amberg , Sonneberg , Tübingen , Jena , Nördlingen , Rottenburg am Neckar , Weißenburg in Bavaria , Fulda , Emden and Lichtenfels . Spreng remained involved in some of these gas works, and also in the gas works in Nuremberg, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Kehl .

Spreng revolutionized gas technology, in particular the extraction of aniline dyes from the waste materials generated during production went back to him. He and business friends built a gas tar products factory in Nuremberg for this purpose . It was the first such factory in Germany. After two years he resigned to devote himself exclusively to the gas company.
