Lona (mythology)
Lona is a goddess in Hawaiian mythology who is associated with the moon.
Lona is regarded as the Polynesian moon goddess who went down to earth and took the mortal man Ai Karaka (also Aikanaka) as her husband. She led him into her own kingdom, the "White Kingdom". It has different names on the Pacific Islands, so it is sometimes referred to as Mahina (Ma-Hina), which corresponds to the Hawaiian word for the moon. Other names are Loa Loa, Loau Lona, Lowa, in Tahiti Ta'aro or Hina and in Samoa as Sina. She lived with Ai Karaka until he died of old man. In Maui, the moon goddess is also called Hina and her human husband is Aikanaka.
