London (Uppsala)
London is the name of a famous public restroom in the heart of Sweden's Uppsala . In 1927 the luxurious, spacious toilet facility was built underground according to plans by the architect Gunnar Leche . It got its name because of the similarity with the underground stations in the British capital London , the London Underground . It was closed in the late 1970s.
Since 2000, a group of Swedish professional photographers from the London Association has organized voluntary exhibitions of photographic art there at regular intervals . The name "London" was retained for the gallery ( Galleri London in Swedish ), the old toilet bowls are integrated into the exhibition rooms. In the meantime, “London” is known to both Swedish art lovers and tourists. The association's plans to turn “London” into a permanent gallery with continuous operation have so far failed due to the lack of toilet facilities due to the veto of the authorities.
