Lord Mayor's State Coach

The Museum of London documents the development of London from its beginnings to the present day. It is located on the edge of the City of London , a few minutes' walk north of St Paul's Cathedral . The museum is free to visit and includes several chronological galleries with original artifacts, models, paintings and diagrams. The focus is on social and economic history as well as the development of urban space. One of the most valuable exhibits is the Lord Mayor's state coach from 1757.

history

Originally there were 2 museums in London that showed the history of London. On the one hand the collection of the City Corporation in the Guildhall Museum and the London Museum in Kensington Palace . In 1965 the "Museum of London" law decided to merge the two collections.

In 1976 the new museum was opened as part of the Barbican Center by the Corporation of London . The architects of the building were Philip Powell and Hidalgo Moya. The team of architects took a new approach to the planning by arranging the various exhibition spaces so that there is only one route through the exhibition that takes visitors from the prehistoric period to modern times.

exhibition

The original exhibition rooms consisted of 4 time periods.

  • Prehistoric London (450,000 BC-50 AD)
  • Roman London (50 AD – 410)
  • Medieval London (410–1588)
  • War, plague and fire (1550-1660)

During the expansion of the museum, which opened in May 2010, the following rooms were added:

  • the growing city (1660-1850)
  • the city of the people (1850-1940)
  • the cosmopolitan city (1950 - today)

Fragments of the London Wall , the old city wall of London, have been preserved immediately outside the museum . The Museum of London is responsible for archaeological rescue excavations in the City area.

The Museum of London owns most of the Cheapside Hoard , a treasure trove from 1912. It contains around 600 pieces of jewelry and precious stones, mostly made in the 17th century. An exhibition until April 2014 brings together all parts of the treasure for the first time since the treasures were found.

Museum of London Docklands

In the summer of 2003, the Museum of London Docklands opened as a branch of the Museum of London in a 19th century warehouse near Canary Wharf . This exhibition looks at the special importance of the port for London. It shows the development of the port from a Roman trading post 2000 years ago to the redesign of the port district in recent years.

Relocation of the museum

In 2017, it was announced that of the £ 250m projected cost of relocating the museum to the former market complex in Smithfield, London, £ 180m had been secured and £ 70m would be borrowed from the City of London . The renovation of the decaying building should be completed by 2022.
