The London Olympics Media Center is a building in London that served as the press and media center for the 2012 Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics . It is located in the Homerton district ( London Borough of Hackney ) on the northwestern edge of the Olympic Park .

description

The Hackney Wick Stadium was previously located on the site of the Olympic Media Center. It was opened in 1932 and served as the venue for speedway and greyhound races . After the operator went bankrupt in 1997, the stadium was demolished in 2003.

During the Olympic candidacy , the intention was to finance the building complex exclusively privately, as it was assumed that there would be enough interested parties for a profitable subsequent use. Due to the global financial crisis , however, demand collapsed. In December 2009, the British state was forced to publicly finance the media center and the Olympic Village , making a total of £ 702 million available from the emergency fund.

Construction began in April 2009 and was completed in July 2011 at a cost of £ 355 million. The 275-meter-long building complex is designed for 24-hour operation and offers space for 20,000 media professionals. It consists of the International Broadcast Center and the Main Press Center . In between, a catering zone and a multi-storey car park were built as a connecting element. After the Olympic Games and the Paralympics, around 90,000 m² of office and commercial space will be available in the building complex.
