Longing for Dawn was a funeral doom band formed in 2002 .

history

Longing For Dawn was founded in the winter of 2002 by guitarist Frederic Arbor and singer Stefan Laroche. The musicians who were friends had previously worked together on various projects and founded Longing for Dawn with the idea of creating a funeral doom project. Arbor and Laroche invited drummer Martin Gagnon, bassist Kevin Jones and the other guitarist Stian Weideborg as other musicians. At the end of 2003 the band began to record their debut album, which was recorded in sporadic recording sessions within a year. One Lonely Path was mixed by Pierre Rémillard at Wild Studio and released in spring 2005. The album was released through the Twilight Foundation , a subcontractor of the Arbor operated post-industrial and dark-ambient label Cyclic Law . Following the release of the debut, the band made several appearances in Quebec. After the successful concerts, the band signed a contract for three albums with Grau Records and changed the line-up. The role of drummer for Martin Gagnon was only taken over by Sylvain Marquette, later by François Fortin. Jones left Longing for Dawn and was replaced by Etienne Lepage. Simon Carignan took over the role of second guitarist after Weideborg left the band. This line-up remained stable and active until 2011. Longing for Dawn released A Treacherous Ascension in this constellation in March 2007 and Between Elation and Despair in March 2009 via Grau Records and performed internationally. The band has been idle since their last appearances in 2011.

reception

Over the course of Longing for Dawn's career, the reception of the publications increased steadily. The debut One Lonely Path was already highly praised in the webzine Metal.de . The reviewer gave 9 out of 10 possible points and justified his assessment by naming the "high rating [...] for an album of this quality" as a "must", "Lovers of melancholy, atmospheric Doom should definitely grab it." Webzine Doom-Metal.com has described the album as an exceptional debut of outstanding quality that is recommended to followers of the genre.

In a review of the second album A Treacherous Ascension written for Metal Storm , the positive assessment was underlined. Longing for Dawn confirms the praise of the debut with the second work and is preparing to become one of the leading groups in the genre. This impression is also expressed in the review written by Oscar Strik for Doom-Metal.com. Longing for Dawn was "not a groundbreaking funeral doom work", but it was "an excellent album by a band that played its way to the top of the genre practically from a standing start". Further reviews written for webzines like Metal1.info or Vampster softened the praise. A Treacherous Ascension is "a strange album - the most boring scrap for some, a revelation for others." In the review written for Vampster, the singing is criticized as being so average that "the emotional possibilities that the songs possess are not exhausted." become.

Between Elation and Despair was then reviewed for print magazines such as Rock Hard and Metal Hammer . The band received mediocre reviews for the first time, with Longing for Dawn "continuing to play in the B-League of Extreme Doom - but in the first places there." The album was highly praised in Rock Hard.

“On their third album, the Canadians LONGING FOR DAWN celebrate Funeral Doom in all its gloriously barren beauty. Enriched with some soundscape-like ambient parts, the songs roll powerfully over the listener, surround him completely and pull him down into an unreal parallel world consisting of pure sadness and despair. And the Depri faction among the Doomheads likes to be dragged along. "

- Andreas Stappert on Between Elation and Despair in Rock Hard # 264

Other reviews followed mostly such positive assessments. It is one of the best genre releases in the recent past, or "52 minutes [...] of (relaxing) exciting and coherent soundscape [which] anyone can get without hesitation". Meanwhile, the album leaves " nothing to be desired for genre fans." Between Elation and Despair is an album that "requires concentration and patience in addition to a mood and a suitable ambience", but then becomes "one of those who stand out from the crowd" Metal.de judged. In the review written for Bloodchamber it says that “the friend of the very slow and dark Doom faction is offered a very appealing piece of music that is atmospherically completely convincing, but could have been a bit more concise in terms of songwriting.” In the one about Stormbringer .at published review, Between Elation and Despair is described as an "uncompromising, but also in the best sense of the word old-fashioned alternative" to common Funeral Doom performers.

style

The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music played by Longing for Dawn as " Funeral Doom with soundscapes and other components of the Dark Ambient ." For a classifying comparison, reference is made to the project Void of Silence , "but less aggressive". Until Death Overtakes Me is used as a further comparison . The atmosphere of the music is categorized as "slow and unforgiving, but at the same time melodic Doom for fans of a truly depressive funeral".

Playing the guitar from a few elongated chord strikes is brought close to Drone Doom . This slow and booming guitar playing is complemented by a drum sound that is perceived as ultra-slow and an "atmospheric surface sound [that] is used discreetly and as a background. In addition, the deep, grunting voice of the singer Stefan Laroche".
