Void of Silence is a funeral doom band founded in 1999 .

history

Void of Silence was founded by Riccardo Conforti and Ivan Zara as a studio project. Over the years of their activity, the band has cooperated with various companies. Various popular singers also got involved as part of Void of Silence.

occupation

Alan Averill, here with Primordial in Paris 2008, was a temporary member of Void of Silence

The band was founded in November 1999 by Riccardo Conforti and Ivan Zara in Rome. In the course of the band's activity, Fabrizio “Malfeitor Fabban” Giannese from Aborym , Alan “AA Nemtheanga” Averill from Primordial and Dread Sovereign , Brooke Johnson from Axis of Perdition and Luca Soi from Arcana Coelestia joined in as vocalists. With each change of singer, the group changed the conceptual-lyric framework, as Conforti and Zara left the singers to write the lyrics, while the musical direction remained similar and was determined by the musicians.

Publications

During their first year as a band, the band played an unreleased demo entitled Rememberance . Guitarist Ivan Zara stated in an interview given to the webzine Doom-Metal.com in 2018 that the band, musically and personally, was still a long way from the later project at the time of the recording and therefore a release would be unlikely. The debut Toward the Dusk was released in 2001 via Nocturnal Music with Fabrizio "Malfeitor Fabban" Giannese as singer. Three subsequent albums, Criteria ov 666 , Human Antithesis and The Grave of Civilization were released between 2002 and 2010 via Code666 Records , a subcontractor of Aural Music . Toward the Dusk was re-released through GS Productions in 2017. The album The Sky Over , released in 2018, was published in cooperation with Avantgarde Music . Zara describes the change from Code666 Records to Avantgarde Music as a friendly desire for change without a conflict-laden separation from the previous label.

style

The music of Void of Silence is assigned to the Funeral Doom . The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music as an "unusual, experimental sound that resembles that of Esoteric ", but differs from the British band by focusing on dark industrial elements and a singularly described vocals that cover a spectrum of Black -Metal screams up to sacral-choral chants cover, delimit. The band describes their music as a combination of the tempo and distortion of Funeral Doom with the atmosphere of Dark Ambient, supplemented by film soundtrack elements.

Similarly, reviewers describe the music as “infernal and at the same time doomy parts [which] are arranged on an equal footing with romantic ambient and industrial sounds”. “Sluggish and sluggish Doom song structures” would be combined with melancholic melodies and epic arrangements that are brought close to Gothic Metal . The use of the keyboard is described as "[t] protruding ambient carpets" that give the sound "width", while the sampling described as industrial elements creates an eschatological atmosphere. The music is characterized by an inner dynamic and diversity. “Fragile chant, accompanied by industrial-style synthesizer parts, flows seamlessly into croaking wailing. Heavy minor riffs always underline the apocalyptic mood. ”In addition to sampling, vocals and keyboard, a mostly melancholy sound from deeply tuned guitars is essential for the music.

reception

The debut album received little, but more positive reviews. According to Kostas Panagiotou , who was later to become involved with Zara's band Towards Atlantis Lights , the band with the album Toward the Dusk can be perceived as the "little brother of Esoteric " and thus borders on the stereotype of Italian funeral doom bands such as MonumentuM and Ras Algethi from. Compared to the international rather subdued reception crowd of the debut, Criteria ov 666 was then widely discussed. Meanwhile, the criticism was divided. Volkmar Weber judged the album for Rock Hard as "stealing from all pots that one thought was usable" and refers to Thergothon , Skepticism , Mindrot , Morgion , Puissance and Ordo Equilibri , whose work Void of Silence used in his opinion. Opposite the album was praised for webzines like Metal.de , Doom-Metal.com and Metal Inside.

"Anyone looking for a soundtrack for the impending end of the world (or even just a bad weather album to which one can indulge in melancholy in a darkened room) should find it in this sound carrier."

- Counterforce via Criteria ov 666 for Metal.de

In particular the change of the singer to AA Nemtheanga was positively noted in various reviews of the third studio album Human Antithesis . Occasionally the album was recognized as music "at the highest level in modern Doom Metal " which transcended the genre. described. The album and band were also praised in a review written for Rock Hard magazine, stating that Void of Silence was " one of the most extraordinary bands" in their home country, alongside Monumentum and Novembre . Further reviews were also highly praised for the album. According to a review written for Metal.de, it “bursts with goose bumps” that arise from the occasional use of a women's choir or the atypical combination of stylistic peculiarities. This is how the band succeeds in creating music "that is probably unique in this form."

The renewed change of the singer clouded the reception of The Grave of Civilasation selectively. "Vocally" wrote agony & ecstasy for Vampster, "Brooke Johnson does his job well," but "could not match the performance of his predecessor at any time". Other reviews also admitted that The Grave of Civilasation is not the best release of Void of Silence, but it still contained "some good and intense moments". Oliver Schreyer, on the other hand, judged Musikreviews.de as “one step closer to the core of dreariness and nihilism that characterizes this kind of Doom Metal [.] The album is monumental and gripping without excessive pathos and in its cool, honest way appears inhuman and oppressive . “In a review written for Metal.de, the singing was even highlighted as essential for the music and extremely diverse. The album is “a large unit of monumental pieces that rarely drift into slight monotony. The rest is dominated by the impressive atmosphere of an album, which is at no time stereotypical Doom Metal. ”Void of Silence is“ now too big for an insider tip. ”According to such assessments, the international reception of the album was broad and despite occasional criticism Singing is mostly positive.

The Sky Over was recognized as “a compilation of deeply atmospheric Funeral Doom pieces, masterfully implemented in all respects”, as well as “slow, orchestral Funeral Doom Metal that […] really hits the mark”, as “absolutely majestic and touching work” and as "Triumphant comeback [...], as well as one of the most majestic, melancholic and multifaceted albums of 2018".
