Award

The title was created on June 12, 1633 for William Crichton, 1st Viscount of Air . Together with the earliest dignity, the subordinate titles Viscount of Air (also Ayr ) and Lord Crichton of Cumnock were created for him. He had already been raised to Viscount of Air and Lord Sanquhar on February 2, 1622 and in 1612 inherited the title of 9th Lord Crichton of Sanquhar from his father , which had been bestowed on January 29, 1488 to his ancestor Sir Robert Crichton . All named titles belong to the Peerage of Scotland and can also be inherited in the female line.

The 5th Earl also inherited the title of 4th Earl of Stair in 1760 , which fell to another line of the family when he died in 1769.

The 7th Earl also inherited the title of 2nd Marquess of Bute in 1814 . Since then, the titles have been subordinate to the Marquessate Bute. Since then, the eldest son of the respective marquess has been using the courtesy title Earl of Dumfries as Heir apparent .

The current title holder is John Crichton-Stuart as 7th Marquess of Bute and 12th Earl of Dumfries.
