Lord Falconer of Halkerton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lord Falconer , of Halkerton (also Halkertoun ), was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The territorial dedication refers to the then family seat of the Lords, Halkerton in Kincardineshire .

Award

King Charles I created the title through letters patent on December 20, 1647 for the Scottish lawyer Sir Alexander Falconer . The title was awarded with the special addition that in the absence of direct male descendants it could also be passed on to other male relatives ( remainder to his heirs-male whatsoever ).

In 1778, after the death of his relative George Keith, 9th Earl Marischal , the 7th Lord succeeded in having the title 5th Earl of Kintore awarded and confirmed to him. His claim to this title, dormant since the death of William Keith, 4th Earl of Kintore in 1761, stemmed from the fact that his grandmother was the sister of this 4th Earl. He was also the hereditary Clan Chief of Clan Keith and then changed his last name to Keith-Falconer . The lord dignity was henceforth a subordinate title of the respective Earls of Kintore until the 10th Earl died childless on May 26, 1966. The earl title then fell to his sister Ethel Keith-Falconer as the 11th Countess, the lord title has been suspended since then, as no male relative has so far succeeded in legally proving his inheritance claim to the title.
