Lord Haliburton of Dirleton
Lord Haliburton of Dirleton (also Lord Dirleton ) was a hereditary British title ( Lordship of Parliament ) in the Peerage of Scotland .
The title was probably bestowed on John Haliburton , Lord of Dirleton Castle , by King James II around 1450 . This is named for the first time in a document dated April 11, 1450 with this title. He was the eldest son and heir to the Treasurer of Scotland , Sir Walter Haliburton († 1447). It is unlikely that the title had already been awarded to his father.
When the male line of descendants of the 1st Lord and the 5th Lord died out around 1506, the title fell to his daughter Janet Haliburton, who married William Ruthven, 2nd Lord Ruthven around 1515 . On her death around 1560, the title passed to her son, 3rd Lord Ruthven, who was henceforth called Lord Ruthven and Dirleton . His son was raised to Earl of Gowrie in 1581 , but ostracized and executed for high treason in 1584 , which deprived him of all three titles of nobility. His son's title, including that of Lord Dirleton , was restored in 1586 as 2nd Earl. His successor, the 3rd Earl, was posthumously ostracized on August 5, 1600 for high treason, so that the title expired retrospectively at the time of his death on November 15, 1600.
