Lorem ipsum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Lorem ipsum" in the Helvetica font

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisici elit, ..." is a dummy text that should not mean anything, but is used as a placeholder in the layout to get an impression of the finished document. The distribution of letters and word lengths in the pseudo- Latin text roughly corresponds to that of the natural Latin language. The text is purposely incomprehensible so that the viewer is not distracted by the content.

Historical origin

The text itself is not really Latin, even the first word "Lorem" does not exist there. Nevertheless, a number of Latin words can be seen in the text, which come from the very similar paragraph 1.10.32 to 1.10.33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum :

"Neque porro quisquam est, qui do lorem ipsum , quia dolor sit , amet , consectetur , adipisci v elit  [...]."

"Furthermore, there is no one who loves pain for its own sake, who looks for it and wants it, simply because it is pain [...]."

It is no longer possible to clarify the origin of the text. There are also many slightly different versions of this text.

While the few lines of "Lorem ipsum" were initially repeated continuously in dummy text, today the Cicero text serves as the basis for many Lorem ipsum generators, which build on them to create longer sections. The word order is so common that many desktop publishing programs have a dummy text menu item that creates a sequence that begins with “Lorem ipsum”. In addition, the word sequence "Lorem ipsum" is now recognized in the electronic print preparation and a warning message is issued so that a publication with remaining dummy text does not accidentally go to print. There are additional packages for typesetting with LaTeX , and Microsoft Word also has a built-in function for generating dummy text. Such blind texts are often used by website developers in order to be able to show customers prototypes of the pages they have commissioned.

example

In a common form, the first paragraph consists of the following words:

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisici elit, sed eiusmod tempor incidunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquid ex ea commodi consequat. Quis aute iure reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint obcaecat cupiditat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. "
