history
2017-Present: Joined the Overwatch League
After weeks of speculation following the announcement of the first seven Overwatch League teams on August 10, Blizzard officially announced that Stan Kroenke and Josh Kroenke have acquired the second Los Angeles OWL franchise spot, making them one of twelve teams in the inaugural season. On November 2nd, the franchise name was revealed as Gladiators in Los Angeles. On October 5th, ESPN reported that Phoenix1, previously known for their League of Legends team, would be running the LA Gladiators team. The roster, which included a conglomerate of players from several previous Overwatch professional esports teams, including Cloud9 , Kungarna, Counter Logic Gaming , Team Giganti and CONBOX, was finally released along with the official franchise branding on November 2nd.
In December 2017, the Gladiators participated in the OWL preseason before kicking off the inaugural season in January 2018.
Branding
On November 2, 2017, the Gladiators brand was officially launched in Los Angeles. The creation resulted from the OWL requirement for franchise companies to create new geolocated brands as well as business units that are specific to the league.
Surname
Josh Kroenke, co-owner of the team, said they chose the name in the "spirit" of the original gladiators. "Gladiators were the original superstars of sports and entertainment. Their fierce competitiveness and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice has captured the hearts of millions of people of all ages for centuries."
logo
The logo for the Los Angeles Gladiators features a roaring white lion encircled by a purple seal. In addition, the "LA" in "Gladiators" in the written logo is offset with the word "Gladiators" in a different color and indicates the location of the team.
Colours
The official team colors are white, purple and black. Josh Kroenke cited the colors worn by the Roman emperors and further linked the team to their Roman Empire-inspired brand.
