Lothar Bakker
Lothar Bakker (born March 1949 ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .
Life
After completing his studies in Bonn at the Koblenz branch of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Monument Preservation, Bakker took over the Research Center for Provincial Roman Archeology in Augsburg, founded in 1978, as successor to Gerd Rupprecht and Jörg Heiligmann on January 1, 1982.
In the summer of 1989, after the retirement of the former museum director Leo Weber, Bakker was given the management of the Roman Museum . Bakker held this office until his retirement on June 30, 2014. In the last five years of his tenure, however, for health reasons he worked entirely in research and left the “day-to-day business” to his deputies. Bakker's main research areas are the wheel-decorated Argon sigillata and the archeology of Roman Augsburg ( Augusta Vindelicorum ) and its surroundings.
In his more than 30 years of work for the city of Augsburg, he developed the urban archeology into the largest municipal archeology in Bavaria. More than 300 emergency excavations were carried out during this time. The finds discovered in the process provided valuable insights into the history of Augsburg and contributed significantly to the clarification of previously unknown connections. Bakker published the results in numerous series and essays.
A major concern of Bakker was and is to convey the content of archeology to the general public. He therefore organized several special exhibitions in the Roman Museum and led countless excavation and museum tours. Bakker was also a lecturer at the University of Augsburg at the Chair of Ancient History for more than 20 years (until 2013) . Today he continues to work as a lecturer at the Volkshochschule Augsburg .
In addition to these activities, Bakker has been a member of the Swabian Research Association since 1994 . Furthermore, he is the 1st chairman of the association PRO AVGVSTA - For Archeology in Augsburg e. V. This association with more than 180 members supports the city archeology and the Roman Museum.
