The temporary exhibition in the Tuscan portico in the armory

The Roman Museum Augsburg contains a collection from different epochs with a focus on Roman times. It was located in the rooms of the former Dominican church until 2012 . Due to static problems, the exhibition had to be closed there. Transition, the exhibits will be in the mid 2015 Tuscan portico of the armory presented.

history

From 1966 to mid-2015, the museum was housed in the rooms of the former Dominican Church (built between 1513 and 1515), a monument in Augsburg . The late Gothic architecture was given a baroque design by the Feichtmayer brothers with a very rich stucco ceiling. As a result of the secularization of 1803/1806, the building became the property of the city. Instead of the threat of demolition, the building was renovated in 1913 with the help of a private donor. From 1966 the holdings of the Antiquarium Romanum, the collection of Roman stone monuments founded by Konrad Peutinger , moved into the vacant church.

In the Dominican Church, archaeological finds from Augsburg and the surrounding area from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age to late antiquity and the early Middle Ages were presented. The focus, however, was on objects from the time of the Roman provincial capital Augusta Vindelicum , probably under Emperor Traian at the end of the 1st century AD.

Important exhibits included a consecration find from Unterglauheim with bronze dishes and gold goblets from the Bronze Age , and the grave inventory of one of the oldest wagon graves in Central Europe from the Hallstatt period . An extensive collection of stone monuments from Roman times with depictions of everyday life: depicting a ball of wool tying, a wine sales scene, stone reliefs depicting porters and ox carts. Furthermore, the Augsburg victory altar from 260 AD, and a complete facsimile of the Tabula Peutingeriana , the medieval copy of a Roman road map. In addition, there was evidence of early Christianity (“Adam and Eve glass bowl” early / mid-4th century AD, gold leaf crosses). The permanent exhibition was supplemented by changing exhibitions and museum educational activities.

present

In December 2012, the museum in the Dominican Church was closed to the public due to static problems with the floor. A partial block for groups and certain areas had already taken place beforehand. The 1,800 individual exhibits from the showcases and the stone monuments were transported to the depot. The entire floor was removed from a total of 1000 m². The reopening date initially planned for mid-2013 was postponed to 2017 in 2013. Crypts have been found under the floor, which are likely located on two levels. Since the city of Augsburg does not want to be satisfied with renovation, but in 2014 gave preference to a new concept including expansion, the new Roman Museum is not expected to open until 2022 at the earliest.

Since June 26, 2015, the exhibits have been temporarily presented in the Tuscan portico of the armory. The new exhibition with the title “Roman Camp. The Roman Augsburg in boxes ”also shows finds that have not yet been seen in the Dominican Church, such as a wooden ship landing from the Lechkies and gemstone pegs with engraved miniatures.
