Lottie Cunningham Wren

Lottie Cunningham Wren (born September 29, 1959 in Bilwaskarma , Nicaragua ) is a Nicaraguan lawyer from the Miskito ethnic group . She defends the rights of indigenous peoples in Nicaragua to their land and resources.

Life

Lottie Cunningham Wren trained as a nurse. However, she later decided to study law . Her motivation was to help indigenous people achieve their rights. She studied law at the Universidad Centroamericana in Managua and received her doctorate there in 1994. She has been working as a lawyer since 1995.

In 2003 Wren founded the non-governmental organization “Centro por la Justicia y Derechos Humanos de la Costa Atlántica de Nicaragua” (CEJUDHCAN, German: Center for Justice and Human Rights on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua ). She is the president of the organization.

In 2020 she received the Right Livelihood Award for her work .
