Lotus Magellan
Lotus Magellan was a desktop search program running under MS-DOS that was developed by Bill Gross and published by the Lotus Development Corporation in the 1980s. Despite its praised effectiveness, Magellan was unable to assert itself in the market, possibly due to the very small hard drives at the time.
Magellan searched all files and directories on a storage medium ( hard disk drive or floppy disk ) and created a central index structure that made it possible to view the files without starting the relevant applications because it could read and interpret most of the contemporary file formats.
Magellan was one of several key programs from Lotus Software (for example, Lotus 1-2-3 , Lotus Notes, and office software for the Apple Macintosh ) that, despite their recognized usefulness and substantial market share, could not prevent the company from moving in 1995 IBM was taken over. The old DOS-based Lotus software Magellan, Lotus Agenda , HAL (an extension for Lotus 1-2-3) and Lotus Manuscript have now been published as freeware .
