Lotzbeck et al. Cie.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The company Lotzbeck u. Cie. was a German tobacco product manufacturer.

history

The merchant Carl Ludwig Lotzbeck founded the snuff company Lotzbeck & Cie in Lahr / Black Forest in 1774 . At that time, domains that were still separate from each other made it difficult for the company to export to nearby Bavaria. Since there was also a high demand for snuff there and they wanted to avoid the high customs duties, a factory was founded in Augsburg in 1812 under the name "Lotzbeckische Tabakfabrik" as a branch of the parent company . In 1867, the two companies in Lahr / Baden and Augsburg split off from each other. The company changed its name to a stock corporation under the name Lotzbeck & Cie AG Augsburg and continued production until 1927. In 1924/25 the company struggled economically. Consumer behavior had changed. Cigar, pipe and cigarette goods became more and more fashionable. The company also tried to produce such tobacco products , but to no avail. In 1925 the company brought Josef Winter into the company, and in 1926 he became the company's board member. He managed to get the company out of debt in order to keep it economical, but further austerity measures had to be taken. The factory site on today's city market in Augsburg was too expensive, a new factory site in front of the Red Gate in Augsburg was also soon discarded and so Josef Winter relocated the factory from Augsburg to Ingolstadt on April 1, 1928 .

Above all, the growing consumption of cigarettes resulted in a decline in snuff sales. This circumstance, as well as the death of the company owner, meant that the snuff production was given up in 1977 in the Kavalier Heydeck .
