Lough Rynn Castle

The Lough Rynn Castle ( Irish Caisleán Loch na Reanna ) is a castle on the isthmus between the lakes Lough Rynn and Lough Erril near the place Mohill in County Leitrim in Ireland . It used to be the seat of the Earls of Leitrim and is now used as a luxury hotel.

The history of the castle goes back about 200 years. The current building was designed in 1833 by Robert Clements, 4th Earl of Leitrim . Next to the main building there is a large park and a typical Irish garden.

The William Clements, 3rd Earl of Leitrim was obsessed to transform the estate Lough Rynn into a flagship operation. He undertook major construction work, gained land and banned slash and burn. But its greatest advance was the ban on land use, which until now consisted of this system: each family was allocated a piece in proportion to their participation in the community. Over the years, the piece of land that every family had got smaller. This made the operational businesses too small to feed the families.
