Louis Gaulard Dumesny , the last name also occurs in the spellings Dumesnil , Du Mesny or Du Mesnil , (* around 1650; † 1702 in Paris , active between 1677 and 1700) was an important French opera singer with a tenor voice in the 17th century.

life and work

Little is known about Dumesny's early life. According to legend, Jean Baptiste Lully is said to have discovered and then trained his talent as a chef while he was singing. Lully was reportedly immediately impressed by his natural, shapely voice. On January 5, 1677 Dumesny made his stage debut as Triton in the prologue of Lully's Isis . As a haute-contre (high tenor) he became the first star of this voice range in France at that time. Lully had Dumesny sing the leading roles in his operas several times in the episode, although Dumesny could not read music. The opera audience subsequently lay at Dumesny’s feet in both Paris and London. After Lully's death, Dumesny took part in the performance of operas by other composers such as Pascal Collasse , Marc-Antoine Charpentier , André Campra and André Cardinal Destouches .

As an excellent actor with a powerful voice, he must have memorized all of his musical roles because he could not read any music.
