Louis Jacques Bresnier (spr. Brenjeh) (born April 11, 1814 in Montargis , † June 21, 1869 in Algiers ) was a French Arabist .

He began as a simple typesetter on his own oriental studies and soon made it to the point that he could attend the lectures Marcels, Étienne Marc Quatremère and Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacys , whereby he acquired a thorough knowledge of the Arabic language and literature. When the French government decided to establish a professorship in Arabic in Algiers , Bresnier was selected for it (1836) and he was very effective in teaching. His main works are:

  • "Cours pratique et théorique de la langue arabe" (2nd edition, Algiers 1855);
  • "Anthologie arabe élémentaire" (Algiers 1852);
  • "Chrestomathie arabe" (2nd edition, Algiers 1856);
  • "Principes élémentaires de la langue arabe" (Algiers 1867).
