Louis Joseph Luzbetak

Louis Joseph Luzbetak SVD (born September 19, 1918 in Joliet , † March 22, 2005 in Techny ) was an American priest, missionary and ethnologist.

Life

The son of Slovak emigrants visited the Sts. Cyril & Methodius School . He joined Steyler Missionaries at St. Mary's Seminary in Techny in 1932 and was ordained a priest there in 1945. After studying theology at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana , he received his doctorate in cultural anthropology from the University of Friborg in 1951 . From 1952 to 1956 he carried out anthropological fieldwork in the Wahgi (valley) of the New Guinea highlands. On his return to the United States, he taught at Divine Word Seminary in Techny and taught at various Christian universities and mission training centers. In 1965, Father Luzbetak became the founding director of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate , where he served as President of Divine Word College until 1973 . In 1979 he became editor of Anthropos magazine and acting director of the Anthropos Institute . From 1987 to 1989 he worked for the Pontifical Council for Culture in the Vatican.
