Love Commandos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Love Commandos is an Indian volunteer working non-governmental organization whose goal is to lovers against forced marriage to protect. At the same time, she works to ensure that the couples do not fall out of favor with their families and thus endanger themselves.

Situation in India

In India, around 90 percent of marriages are arranged by parents: The selection of potential spouses follows traditional criteria: caste membership , religion, horoscope, etc. Love only plays a subordinate role in Hindu India, especially since the principle of being in love is strongly stigmatized as a sign of weakness is. Love across certain social boundaries is therefore not only viewed poorly in society, but also extremely dangerous for affected couples. Honor killingsin such a context are not uncommon. The Indian police often refuse to provide support and instead often help families to put the men in prison for allegedly raping their women.

Composition and approach of the organization

The members of the association, founded in 2010, come from different parts of society, both in terms of caste, religion and profession. They are businessmen, lawyers, journalists and human rights activists. Exactly who is a member is largely unknown, as the activity involves a certain degree of danger. A member was only murdered in May 2015. The current chairman is Harsh Malhotra. Due to this heterogeneity of members, the couples can not only be assured of legal support - also during their marriage - but also the offer of protected secret rooms in which they can initially hide from their families until the situation is clarified. There is also a hotline that those affected can contact 24 hours a day. It is estimated that it is used 7,000 times a day. It is assumed that there are around 600,000 private supporters of the organization who help with the implementation of the activities. Celebrities and businessmen also occasionally call for fundraising campaigns for the organization.
