Lubang is a Philippine island in the South China Sea , a marginal sea of the Pacific . The island is located 20 kilometers northeast of Mindoro Island and 115 kilometers southwest of the Philippine capital Manila . On September 16, 1646, the fourth of the five naval battles of La Naval de Manila took place in the waters off the island and went down in the history of the Philippines as the victory over the Netherlands.

geography

Lubang is of volcanic origin and densely forested. Together with three nearby islands ( Ambil , Cabra and Golo ) as well as numerous smaller islets and rocks, it forms the group of Lubang Islands . Lubang is hilly, about 30 km long and on average almost 8.5 km wide.

The main town of the same name on the island, Lubang , is located in the northwest.

curiosity

In 1974 the Japanese soldier Onoda Hirō , declared missing for decades, was found in the dense forests of Lubang, who had holed up there since the Pacific War (1937-1945). When he was discovered, the man erroneously assumed that World War II was not yet over.
