Luca d'Andrea della Robbia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luca d'Andrea della Robbia (* after 1482 probably in Florence , † after February 17, 1547 probably in Paris ) was an Italian sculptor and Dominican . Sometimes he is also called as Luca della Robbia the Younger .

Life

Luca d'Andrea della Robbia was one of seven sons of the sculptor Andrea della Robbia and his wife Giovanna di Piero di Ser Lorenzo di Paolo, who were born between 1467 and 1488. He was trained by his father. One of his most important orders was the manufacture of majolica tiles for Raphael's loggias . In a document dated September 10, 1518 he is referred to as "Frate", so that today it is considered certain that he, like his brothers Marco and Paolo (as Fra Ambrogio and Fra Mattia), joined the Dominican order. What became of the brothers Antonio (* 1467) and Francesco (* after 1472) is not known. He later followed his brother Girolamo della Robbia to France, where he received tax exemption in 1546. His older brother Giovanni della Robbia (1469 - around 1529) was the third-born son of his parents and had supported his father in his work from an early age.

D'Andrea della Robbia belonged to the third generation of the important Florentine family of artists. His works are solidly executed and are entirely in the tradition of the Della Robbia workshop.
