Ludwig Hailmann

Ludwig Hailmann (* unknown; † first half of the 16th century; also Ludwig Heilman ) was a German hymn poet .

Life / work

He composed the hymn Praise God, you pious Christians, rejoice and celebrate with David the psalmist . This was very widespread at the time of the Reformation, first in individual prints, then in song collections. A line of the eleventh stanza informed the author of the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie that the passage refers to the Speyer Reichstag farewell of 1526, which is why, in his opinion, the work must have been written in 1526/1527. However, KEP Wackernagel writes in his book "Das deutsche Kirchenlied" (Stuttgart, Verlag von SG Liesching 1841) on page 331: "The poem may have been printed as early as 1517 shortly after the outcome of Luther's theses."

The song found its way into several hymn books of the 16th century, but the last historical appearances were in the middle of the 17th century. In a modified form, the song found its way into the main part of the Evangelical Church Hymns (No. 202); it was not included in the Protestant hymnbook used today .

On the other hand, very little is known about Hailmann, he came from southern Germany and was a loyal follower of Luther . His name was reconstructed from the first letters of the song lines.
