The term air corridor describes spatially delimited zones specified by air traffic control , in which airspace monitoring takes place and in which certain flight altitudes are specified for types of aircraft . It follows a precisely defined route so as not to violate the air sovereignty of the states concerned (see also overflight law ). Occasionally, such an air corridor also lies over no man's land or over the open sea outside the 12-mile zone .

Predefined connections

Air corridors must be used in accordance with agreements or regulations. Causes for the existence of a corridor can be:

  1. In civil or military air traffic for the orderly minimization of risks and / or route optimization
    1. Avoiding collisions
    2. Navigation points
      1. Radio beacon
      2. Terrestrial navigation
    3. Use of air currents (e.g. the jet stream over the North Atlantic)
    4. Avoiding typical dangers
      1. Overflight bans
        1. Endangered objects (e.g. reactor plants, potentially endangered industrial plants)
        2. Counter-espionage (e.g. military objects, research and test sites)
        3. Environmental protection (exhaust gas, noise pollution, protected areas)
      2. Environmental conditions
        1. Climatic requirements (e.g. regular bad weather zones)
        2. Geomagnetic interference ( compass navigation , radio traffic)
        3. Volcanoes
        4. Bird airlines (protected areas, migratory bird routes) to avoid bird strikes
    5. Differentiation between civil, test and military air traffic
    6. Politically determined requirements (e.g. war , embargoes , restrictions )

Connections used

Which connection is preferred is based on e.g. B. to:

  1. Experience
  2. Local knowledge
  3. Environmental conditions
  4. preferences
