Memorial to the battle at Rugaro

Lugalo (also Rugaro) is a place in Tanzania not far from the city of Iringa .

On August 17, 1891, at what is now Lugalo, there was a battle at Rugaro between the newly formed protection force for German East Africa under their commander Emil von Zelewski and the Hehe armed forces under their chief Mkwawa . The defeat of the German side marked the beginning of the long-running war against the Hehe, which only ended in 1898 with the suicide of King Mkwawa.

A German memorial right next to the Tanzam Highway commemorates this battle today.
