The Lugu Lake ( Chinese 泸沽湖 , Pinyin Lugu Hú ) is a mountain lake on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in the People's Republic of China .
It lies at an altitude of 2690.75 m above sea level and, with an area of 48.5 km², is one of the largest mountain lakes in Asia . By the lake, the provincial border runs between the Autonomous County Ninglang the Yi in Yunnan and the county Yanyuan in Sichuan . It is a popular tourist destination. It is considered a cultural center by the Mosuo , who call it the “mother lake” in their language. A Buddhist monastery is located on one of the eight islands .
