Luigi Lugiato (born December 17, 1944 in Limbiate , Province of Milan) is an Italian physicist who deals with nonlinear optics and quantum optics.

Lugiato graduated from the University of Milan with a degree in physics in 1968 , where he continued his research. From 1972 to 1974 he was at the National Institute for Nuclear Research (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Section Milan) and at the same time assistant professor in Milan. From 1987 he had a full professor of atomic physics at the Polytechnic in Turin and in 1990 he became professor of quantum electronics in Milan. Since 1998 he has been Professor of Physics at the University of Insubria .

Lugiato works mostly theoretically. Among other things, he dealt with optical bistability, optical instabilities, non-classical light (e.g. squashed states), the formation of optical patterns ( Lugiato-Lefever equation with Renè Lefever ), cavity solitons and quantum images ).

From 1988 to 1994 he was co-editor of Optics Communications , 1991 to 1993 Physical Review A and 1989 to 1994 Quantum Optics. He is co-editor of the European Physical Journal D.

In 1987 he received the Albert A. Michelson Medal with Rodolfo Bonifacio . In 2003 he was awarded the Quantum Electronics and Optics Prize of the European Physical Society and in 2002 the Willis E. Lamb Prize . For 2019, Lugiato was awarded the Quantum Electronics Award . He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and the American Physical Society . Since 1996 he has been on the advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching. In 2011 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .
