Luka Rajky culture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Luka Rajky culture (Ukrainian Лука-Райковецька культура ) was a Slavic archaeological culture from the 7th to 9th centuries in what is now Ukraine .

Distribution area

The Luka Rajky culture stretched between the upper western Bug in the west and the Dnieper in the east.

It was named after the ramparts in the Luka corridor near the village of Rajky in Berdychiv Raion in the Zhytomyr Oblast . Another important site was the early castle complex in Kiev .

Emergence

The Luka Rajky culture developed in the 7th century from the early Slavic Korchak culture .

The carriers were various East Slavic tribes such as the Dulebs , Drewljanen and Poljanen . It is related to the simultaneous Middle Slavic cultures of Feldberg and Rüssen ceramics .

economy

Agriculture and animal husbandry were the basis of life. The processing of metals such as iron was developed (smelting furnace e.g. in Rajky). There were u. a. typical Slavic temple rings, small anthropomorphic fibulae, bracelets found.

Ceramics

The ceramic was decorated in various ways. It follows the Prague-Korchak culture in terms of material, type of design and shape. At first it was hand-formed, from the 9th century onwards the upper part was turned and later made entirely on the potter's wheel. In the course of time the shapes changed to lower and wider and more strongly profiled vessels.

Settlements

The settlements were on rivers and lakes and were mostly unfortified. Since the 9th century, fortified ramparts have been built up, which functioned as handicraft, trade and administrative centers.

The houses were sunk into the earth or at ground level.

Funeral culture

Initially cremated remains was buried in urns in cemeteries, since the 8th century proliferated in burial mounds without urns.

successor

Since the 10th century, the Luka Rajky culture developed into the medieval culture of the Kievan Rus .
