The Hessian Day of Remembrance for the victims of flight, displacement and deportation is celebrated on the second Sunday in September. It is a reminder of the togetherness in Europe, so that expulsion and deportations in the sense of the charter of German expellees remain outlawed as a political tool. It is a day of remembrance and a warning to protect human rights, for peace and freedom and does not qualify the memory of other victims of the Nazi tyranny and the Second World War .

background

Around a quarter of all citizens living in Hesse have experienced escape or displacement themselves or are affected by the fate of their closest relatives. They lost their property, their homes and many their loved ones.

Hessen wants to keep the memory of these events alive for future generations and to urge responsibility and reconciliation. This day of remembrance is also a sign of appreciative recognition for the successful integration and the development work of the expellees, repatriates and ethnic repatriates in Hesse.
