Lukuledi (city)

Lukuledi is a city in the region Mtwara in Tanzania . It is the main town in the ward of the same name . Lukuledi has 5,898 inhabitants, of which 51.6% are men (2002). Lukuledi is about 330 m above sea level. NN on the south bank of the river of the same name .

history

On February 2, 1895, a mission station of the Benedictine order was opened in Lukuledi . As early as 1898, the mission had to be abandoned due to lack of water and relocated to Nyangao . The mission was destroyed and rebuilt several times in its history (e.g. during the Maji Maji uprising ), but it still exists today.

On October 18, 1917, in the course of the First World War , a battle broke out in Lukuledi between the German protection force and a British unit from the Gold Coast , which ended with the British withdrawing.
