Excavation site and remains of the Roman villa found near Lullingstone

Lullingstone is a village in Kent , England . It is located about 17 miles southeast of central London and was incorporated into Eynsford in 1955 . The village is known for the Roman villa at Lullingstone and for Lullingstone Castle .

history

It is believed that there was once an Iron Age settlement above the castle .

In 1939, the remains of a Roman villa dating from 100 AD were discovered near the village. There were also shards and coins from around 1 to 43 AD. The Roman villa existed until around the year 400. A fire finally destroyed the building and it was never rebuilt.

Around 1937 there were plans in the area of Lullingstone to build an airfield the size of what is now Heathrow Airport . Although the areas intended for this had already been firmly reserved and the construction of the local train station had already begun, this construction project was finally abandoned with the outbreak of the Second World War . Instead, a so-called decoy airfield was built near Lullingstone to divert enemy bombers from Biggin Hill airfield . The station was never completed either. The parts that had already been built were largely demolished by 1955.
