Luperomorpha xanthodera is a flea beetle (tribe Alticini, subfamily Galerucinae) from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae).

features

The 2.8–4 mm long beetles have a black or dark brown basic color. The pronotum is colored orange-red. The posterior femora are thickened.

distribution

The species is native to East Asia (China). The beetle species has been detected in Europe since the early 2000s. It was probably brought in with the importation of ornamental shrubs. The species was first found in England in 2003. It now occurs in Central and Western Europe as well as in Italy.

Way of life

The adults feed on pollen and nectar from various plants. These include among other the Oleander ( Nerium oleander ), the Japanese euonymus ( Euonymus japonicus ), the Straucheibisch ( Hibiscus syriacus ), the Chinese Pittosporum ( Pittosporum tobira ), roses ( Rosa ), fire spikes ( Pyracantha ), citrus ( Citrus ) the Japanese splendor spar ( Astilbe japonica ) and the gold lacquer ( Erysimum cheiri ). The larvae probably develop in the roots of these plants. In large numbers, the beetles can cause damage in garden centers and tree nurseries. The beetle species is bivoltine , at least in warmer regions , that is, it forms two generations per year. The adult beetles of the first generation are observed from March to July, those of the second generation from June to May. The species overwinters in all stages of development and as adult beetles in the ground.
