Lure from Ulvkær

The Luren of Ulvkær are two S-shaped instruments from the Bronze Age . They were found in 1988 in the former Ulvkærmose (moor) on the southern outskirts of Hirtshals , in the Hjørring district in the Nordjylland region in Denmark . So far there have been three finds of Lurs from Jutland , each of which was deposited in pairs, including the six Lurs from Brudevælte , which were found in 1797.

description

The two bronze cast Lurs from Ulvkær weigh almost three kilos each. The approximately 1.75 m long, bent pipes were formed in six parts and put together with sleeves. At one point each lure can be dismantled for transport, which was also done before the lure was laid in the moor. This is also shown by the patina on the sleeves of the two parts. The plate-shaped end, each decorated with five humps, has a diameter of 15.5 cm. The Ulvkær lurs are the first to be found in Denmark since 1894. From rock carvings we know that the lurs were also played in pairs, the tuning is the same on both instruments.
