Lusitanism
As Lusitanism ( Latin Lusitania - Portugal and -ism ) one describes
- 1. any linguistic feature that is typically used in Portugal and not in the entire Portuguese- speaking area .
- 2. Words or expressions that originally come from the Portuguese-speaking area, but which
- a) in other Portuguese-speaking countries (such as Brazil , Angola , Mozambique and others), or
- b) in other languages
- were taken over.
Examples of Lusitanisms in German are palaver to palavra (the word) or fetish to feitiço (magic; artificial).
