The Luther Church

The Lutherkirche is a church in Castrop-Rauxel and one of the landmarks of the old town of Castrop . It was in 1881 by the Protestant church Castrop-style Neobacksteingotik built and 1st Advent (November 30, 1881) in a festive service of the same year opened .

In the anteroom of the church there is a valuable grave epitaph of Philipp von Viermundt , who introduced the Reformation in Castrop at Bladenhorst Castle . After the castle church was demolished, the epitaph was placed in the Luther Church. The Luther Church is used again and again for concerts due to its good acoustics.

history

The Luther Church has undergone numerous changes during its existence. The oldest known photo dates from the time before the First World War and shows the interior without the side galleries , with a large chandelier and with the original glazing, on which Christ was depicted as World Redeemer. The original bronze bell was melted down during World War I. In 1921 the church received three cast steel bells from the Bochum Association, tuned to cis ′, e ′ and g ′.

The increased number of parishioners made it necessary to install the side galleries in 1928. Following this work, the church was repainted by the painter Heinrich Rüter. The sanctuary was designed by him in warm, red-brown tones. On Reformation Day in 1929, the church was named Luther Church .

After the Second World War, the church was so badly damaged that it was not until Pentecost 1946 that its service could be celebrated again. Despite a redesign of the interior in 1951, the simple emergency glazing remained in place until the church was renovated in the 1960s.

During this renovation, all the ornaments were painted over and the church was given a sober, monochrome paint. At the same time, the altarpiece was removed and replaced with a simple wooden cross. The neo-Gothic altarpiece with the picture of the prodigal son was restored and put up again in 1981 for the 100th anniversary of the church.

The church received its current painting during the renovation in 2001.

The Luther Church has been part of the Evangelical Paulus Parish in Castrop since September 1, 2007 .
