The Lutherplatz in Kassel is an area that was created in late historicism and originally refers to the court of death of the Lutheran community in Neustadt.

location

Lutherplatz is bounded by Rudolf-Schwander-Strasse in the west, Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse in the north and Mauerstrasse in the east. The City-Point and Kurfürstengalerie shopping centers are adjacent to the south-east.

Development

The 76 meter high tower of the Luther Church stands on the square . The church, consecrated in 1897, was badly damaged in the Second World War and then demolished except for the tower. In 1970 a new building was erected in the immediate vicinity.

In the north of the square, the TRA.FO cultural initiative used a transformer building for art exhibitions, music projects, performances and workshops from 2002 to 2013.

history

It has been used as a cemetery since 1564, and burials took place until 1843. One of the still preserved graves is that of Dorothea Grimm, the mother of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm (died 1808). Other graves still preserved are those of Carl Schomburg (first Lord Mayor of Cassel, * 1791, † 1841), Friedrich Wilhelm I (last Elector of Hessen-Kassel, * 1802, † 1875) and the electoral family and of Heinrich Christoph Jussow (architect and garden designer, * 1754, † 1825). All of the named graves are honor graves of the city of Kassel .
