Church of the Assumption

Building history

Originally the church in Mitterauerbach was a Romanesque complex with a choir and tower. The oldest parts of the wall between the choir and the two entrances bear witness to this. Around 1400 the Romanesque choir was replaced by an elongated Gothic choir, the ribbed vault of which has been preserved with two bays, and the tower on the north side of the choir got its current appearance. At that time the church was a pilgrimage church dedicated to St. Leonhard . Around 1778 it was rebuilt and expanded and renamed "Mariä Himmelfahrt". The nave was lengthened and raised and the shape of the choir arch was changed. A medieval cross stone stands on the outer church wall, to the right of the entrance.

Furnishing

The furnishings of the church - high altar, side altar, confessional, pulpit and organ - essentially date from the 18th century. Frescoes , which were created between 1480 and 1500, decorate the vault of the choir. On them are depicted angels , church fathers , evangelist symbols and the four symbols of the virginity of Mary :

  • a lion that gives life to its cubs by its breath,
  • a pelican who feeds his young with his heart,
  • an ostrich that lets the sun hatch its eggs and
  • a phoenix, reborn from the ashes.

The lamb of God and rosette motifs are depicted on the keystones.

The high altar, a work of the Luybl brothers from Nabburg, with a late Gothic Madonna , is flanked by Saints Leonhard and Aegidius . The figure of the Virgin on the north wall of the nave dates from the 15th century. On its south wall there is a baroque cross and a figure of the shepherd patron Wendelin with animals. The organ is decorated with rococo carvings. The font, which is now used as a holy water font, dates from the 12th century.
